How it all started...
Northwest Church of God resulted from the merging of two churches. Burlington Church of God and Oakwood Church of God.
The Burlington Church of God was founded by Rev. George W. Britt in 1934. It later moved to Speedway Circle in east Knoxville. Rev. H. L. Whittington built the new sanctuary and served as pastor in 1945.
The Oakwood Church of God was organized in 1942 by Rev. Andy Long. On October 6, 1966, the Burlington and Oakwood Churches of God merged into one church known as the Oakwood Church of God. The church was located at 506 Emerald Ave. It remained at this location until 1979 when it moved to its present location, located at 5320 Pleasant Ridge Road, and is now known as the Northwest Church of God.

Expanding the vision...
We believe that God is calling us to more, more impact, more connection, and more purpose. As we grow in faith and unity, we are expanding our vision to reach beyond the walls of our church and into the heart of our community and world.
Our expanded vision is rooted in three priorities: deeper discipleship, broader outreach, and stronger community. We’re investing in new ministries, empowering future leaders, and creating spaces, both physical and spiritual, where people can encounter the transforming love of Jesus.
This next chapter is about being bold with our faith, generous with our resources, and intentional with our mission. Northwest isn’t just growing in size; we’re growing in impact. And every person who walks through our doors is a part of that story.
Come grow with us as we follow where God is leading, into greater purpose, deeper love, and a wider reach than ever before.

Where we are headed...
At Northwest Church of God, we're stepping boldly into the future with a renewed sense of purpose and passion. Our vision is to be a Christ-centered community that brings transformation to lives, families, and neighborhoods through authentic relationships, Spirit-led worship, and compassionate outreach.
We believe the church is not just a place, but a people on mission, called to love deeply, grow faithfully, and serve generously. As we move forward, our focus is on equipping believers to live out their faith daily, creating space for the next generation to lead, and expanding our impact both locally and globally.
Whether you're new to the faith, returning after time away, or looking for a place to grow deeper, Northwest is committed to walking with you on your spiritual journey. Together, we’re building a church that reflects the heart of God and shines His light into the world.
